Most AI tools are designed to generate new things. NotebookLM is different. It is designed to work with things you already have: your documents, your notes, your presentations, your recordings. You give it your knowledge and it becomes an expert on it.
That distinction matters enormously if you are trying to build an income around what you already know.
What NotebookLM actually is
NotebookLM is a free research assistant from Google. You upload sources: PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube videos, audio files, website URLs, and it analyses them. Then you can chat with your sources, ask questions, generate summaries, create study guides, and produce audio overviews. It only works with what you give it, which means it won't hallucinate information from outside your documents.
That last part is the key difference from ChatGPT. When you ask ChatGPT about your specific industry or your specific knowledge, it may fill in gaps with plausible-sounding fiction. NotebookLM sticks to what you uploaded.

Click 'New notebook' and give it a name.

Ask it: 'What are the five most valuable insights in this document?' Then: 'What questions would someone new to this topic ask?'

Click 'Audio Overview' in the top right. NotebookLM will generate a 10-15 minute podcast-style conversation about your content between two AI hosts. This is genuinely impressive and can be used as a standalone audio product.
